Development means fundraising and the activities that support it. At Michigan, development includes professionals in major gifts, alumni relations, special events, communications, research, estate planning and more.

U-M's approach to fundraising is donor-centered. Development staff work collegially across the University to build relationships with donors that benefit them and advance Michigan's mission.

Where do Michigan's development professionals work?
About 450 people work in development at Michigan, with about 140 in the Office of University Development and the remainder working in the University's 19 schools and colleges and 22 units. Development staff work at U-M's main campus in Ann Arbor, as well as at the U-M campuses in Flint and Dearborn.
U-M's development offices vary in size and structure, depending on the needs of the school, college or unit. Typically, directors of development report to their dean or center director. Unit development teams may include staff in major gifts, annual giving, communications, stewardship and alumni relations. The Office of University Development (OUD) includes professionals in these areas, with all OUD staff ultimately reporting to Vice President for Development Tom Baird.
